Mercy Hunter

Mercy Hunter

(1910 - 1989)

Mercy Hunter was born in Ulster, but spent a lot of her childhood in China with her missionary parents. She returned to Belfast in her teens and, after a time studying in London, returned to her native city, where she spent a long career as an art teacher, touching the lives of many young people along the way. Her legacy is as much in the way she inspired others as in the body of art she left behind. Mercy Hunter was a larger than life character and was considered to be the very heart of Ulster’s art scene.

Mercy Hunter is best known for her meticulous pencil drawings and paintings of local scenes. She was also a fantastic calligrapher and designed many costumes for theatre.
